Hi all, my thoughts on this are (in short):

I am also very much in favor of some lightweight data format like JSON. 
Another candidate could be YAML.

We should give high priority to being platform independent and look out 
for an existing definition that we could use.

It would be sensible to choose a chemically oriented format (ARFF may be 
too generic).
