Dear Colleagues,

We would like to invite you to participate in our session at the SETAC
Europe 21st Annual Meeting that will held in Milan, Italy from 15-19 May
2011.

Our session is devoted to share experience gained from the integration of
alternative approaches within the REACH related risk assessment framework.
We invite the scientific community to present new research related to the
development, validation and application of alternative methods as well as
emerging approaches useful for the characterization of hazardous properties
of existing and emerging pollutants which can improve the robustness and
reliability of the related risk assessment. As indicated by the chair team,
this session also intends to stimulate the exchanges from academia,
regulators, and industry on solutions to the questions stated above.

We are looking forward to your submission!

Theme: J - Risk assessment & regulation

Session: J13 - Risk assessment of chemicals within REACH integrating
alternative methods and non testing strategies

Description: Environmental protection needs a high accuracy of risk
assessment of chemicals. Traditionally this is done by standard laboratory
test systems and higher tier tests. REACH aims to achieve a proper balance
between societal, economic and environmental objectives, and attempts to
efficiently use the scarce and scattered information available on the
majority of substances. Thereupon REACH aims to reduce the need for animal
testing by optimised use of in silico and in vitro information on related
compounds.

The aim of this session is to stimulate the exchange between
eco-toxicologists and substance property experts with (Q)SAR model
developers and algorithm developers and with non-(Q)SAR specialists
requiring access to models and data. We want to provide a forum to exchange
experiences gained within REACH. Contributions to this session may not only
include development, validation and application of QSAR/QSPR models but may
also focus on the use and reliability of Read Across, or Weight of Evidence
approaches. Consequently the area of application may be range from
ecotoxicology to fate and behaviour as well as to hazardous properties (e.g.
SVHC assessment). We invite you to share innovative results and scientific
solutions e.g. from the REACH related FP6 and FP7 EU funded projects (i.e.
CADASTER, CAESAR, OPENTOX, OSIRIS…). The identification of safe alternatives
to unsafe substances or new knowledge on "hot" chemical classes may round up
our session. Overall the topics addressed in this session may reflect
experiences in chemical regulation and may propose new and emerging
approaches for decision making in the future.
